After surviving six close calls in his early twenties, Winston Cowie chose to live with a growth mindset and adventurous spirit. In this compelling memoir, he shares tales from his early days in New Zealand, to sixteen years spent exploring the Kingdoms of Arabia.

Raised in rural New Zealand, Winston’s early life was shaped by the ocean, sport, and a love of nature. After qualifying as a lawyer, he realised the corporate world wasn’t for him. A cold shower aboard his wooden yacht became the catalyst for change—leading to Oxford University, a career in marine conservation, adventures across fifty countries and the seven continents, and ultimately, to Arabia.

For the past sixteen years, Winston has lived and worked across the Kingdoms of Arabia—Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman, Qatar and beyond—chasing marine conservation outcomes, sailing dhows, exploring, and immersing himself in the cultures and communities of Arabia. He has dived with whale sharks, led Antarctic expeditions, and raised a family in a region that is a bridge between east and west.
